Column 04

The soldier as diplomat and fighter

Columns1 min readUpdated 12/2020

It makes me wonder that many train the body, but only few the mind.
Seneca

The partisan, the guerrilla fighter, the terrorist swims among the population like a fish in water. That water must be taken away from him.

For the fight against terror we must train and educate our soldiers to be true all-rounders who can do everything: they must be far-sighted, shrewd diplomats with an understanding of religion, customs and culture, who can effortlessly wrap anything and anyone around their finger; the Good Samaritan; the traffic policeman; the explosive ordnance disposal man and, if need be, a determined, capable fighter; in an emergency an ice-cold, merciless fighter who can play chess and who is prepared to sacrifice pawns to preserve the strategic overall objective.

Historical examples of sacrificed pawns:
The sinking of the Lusitania in 1915.
The bombing of Coventry without prior evacuation in 1940.

(according to Winterbotham's account, case study)

Many a person thinks he has a good heart, when all he has is weak nerves.
Marie von Ebner-Eschenbach

For to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
Paul

I have a new persecution complex: reality is hot on my heels.
